BLKATS

WE REVIEW THE NEW EP FROM BLKATS – LONDON IS LONELY

London is Lonely is BLKATS first debut 3-song EP. It’s alternative rock and the band are quite mysterious as they wear masks, covering their identity – which makes them undeniably secretive and mystifying.

Their music is very upbeat and dark. The first song on the EP being London is Lonely is just 3 minutes long and the whole song feels like they are talking from their own personal experiences being in London. It starts off with a slow introduction and builds up throughout the song with the guitar and bass coming in full swing with a drum beat so intense and hard-hitting it’s hard to turn this song off and not listen to what else is to come. With lyrics such as ‘we have to get out this place and start a better life’ highlights their experience even more. The vocals in the song have some sort of effect – similar to what Gorillaz use on their tracks. It fits perfectly within the song.

We then move on to the second track of the EP 3:45AM and the vibes haven’t changed too much, it has more of an upbeat tempo than the first but you can tell it is their sound as the vocals sound very similar to the first track. This is more of a track you could skank to as it has those ska(ish) vibes to it with the guitar and drums being cheery. It seems this song is about partying and getting way too drunk with lyrics like ‘had too much and I’ve lost my car keys‘ and ‘it’s time to party‘. I would listen to this song on a regular basis as it’s very much danceable and it has personality. The song is great and relatable!

SCAVENGER HUNT is the third and last track of the EP. This song is very different to the first two with the vocals sounding unsimilar to what we have heard before from the band. It has a calmer vibe to it. The instrumental even sounds calmer and I quite like this from the band as it sounds a bit more experimental rather than having the same sound consistently throughout. There’s no vocal effects and it sounds as if they used a distortion pedal on the guitar to give it a different vibe which, as said previously, it works well for this track. The song seems as though it’s about a certain person who left and they are looking for them in everything. hence the name ‘scavenger hunt’.

This is a great debut EP and I can’t wait to see what BLKATS release next! It is definitely worth the listen if you’re wanting something different to add to your playlist and to also support small, upcoming bands.
