The debut EP by Freefall., ‘Fire’, is a bold combination of fan favourites and new material, building on their heavy successes from their first year as a band. Having already gathered over seventy thousand listens in their short time as a band, this 4-piece from Swansea, Wales promise to deliver with songwriting that cut through their sound.
Opening track ‘Fire’, sharing a title with the EP itself, infuses funky bass and guitar sounds with direct, punk-inspired vocals and songwriting. The first of two new songs to be featured on the EP, it’s heavy. It’s funky. It’s exactly what you bring a debut EP to life. A boisterous introduction to the sound of Freefall., second track ‘Deano’ brings a slightly more atmospheric vibe to the table. A fairly formulaic indie / post-punk sound for most of the song, the low vocal notes and introduction of brass instruments give it the edge it needs to hang with the big boys. Two previously unheard tracks. Two absolute hits.
‘Head’s Underwater’ comes next, released previously as a single earlier this year. An audibly lighter sound, Freefall. tackle darker themes with their lyricism whilst maintaining a sound that works within the grounds of the EP. A slow build, ‘Head’s Underwater’ bursts into life in the final minute, creating a rawness to the product that feels so hard to fabricate. An exploration of current and future sounds, authenticity oozes out of this four-piece.
Penultimate track, ‘Keep You Waiting’, reintroduces the grittier, post-punk sound, with crisp riffing and an infectious brass sound. Gushing with good vibes, the chorus almost goes pop-punky with Americanised vocals and heavier tones but somehow it works a charm. Absolutely fantastic.
The final piece to the puzzle, ‘Changing’, borrows a suit from classic rock ‘n’ roll and yet it’s tailored to perfection. Catchy vocal melodies intertwined with the vibes of a stateside road trip, it’s position as lead single makes the upmost sense. ‘Changing’ closes the EP exceptionally, establishing their sound and preparing for the future of Freefall.
Having already played at the prestigious O2 Academy, these lads are onto something big and ‘Fire’ proves just why they find themselves in this position after only a year. Excellent from start to finish, Freefall. will only get bigger from here.
