Raw vulnerability and emotion are the cornerstones of James Walsh’s music. Fresh off the back of a captivating performance at Victorious Festival, the Warrington-based singer/songwriter has released his latest EP.
Renewal is both a metaphorical and literal representation, as it marks Walsh’s return to music since his critically acclaimed Coming Good in 2023. It comprises five enchanting songs.
The opening track, Love Will Surely Come, encapsulates the buttery tones and arrangements that run throughout the EP. It begins with a finger-picked guitar pattern backed by gentle strings, creating a deep, soulful vibe that encourages reflection.

There are no hidden meanings in Walsh’s lyrics, as it’s clear he writes from the heart and delivers his words with a poise that’s only born from experience. In the second song, Tulips, Walsh enthrals his listeners through delicate storytelling and poetic hooks; it feels like we’re going to make it/everything is coming up tulips now.
Strangers In The Bar is equally as stunning with the addition of relatability. It’s the evolution of a meet-cute captured by slow, pondering acoustics and orchestral accompaniment. The parts balance beautifully, allowing Walsh’s strong yet sensitive vocals enough space to breathe.
The EP’s title track, Renewal, holds a sight intensity over the rest of the songs, sustaining a faster pace and more elevated energy. Again, the lyrics stand at the forefront of the musical tale, bringing James Walsh’s renewal to life; I want to keep you safe/I want to be your king/want you to make believe you can do anything.
Walsh rounds things off on a warm and overtly emotional note with All That I’ve Got Left. The simple piano ballad stands at just under two minutes, acting as a gorgeously sweet conclusion to the EP.
