KATE PENDING

WE REVIEW THE NEW EP FROM KATE PENDING – TWO WORDS

Kate Pending’s new EP “Two Words” lands like a 3am conversation you weren’t prepared to have — soft-edged at first, then suddenly heavy, then somehow euphoric without ever fully letting you off the hook.

Berlin has a habit of churning out electronic producers who think darkness equals depth and reverb equals emotion, but Kate cuts through that bollocks with something much more intentional. Her music feels lived-in, not stylised. It’s the sound of someone who actually gives a shit about texture, space, and the human fingerprints left between the synths.

It opens with Hibiskus, It’s atmospheric in that understated, future-garage way — Kates words spoken over a clipped percussion, It’s beautifully done, just a tad too polite.

Then comes Nothing Changes, the first moment the EP properly cracks open. The beats tighten, the synth layers thicken, and there’s this lovely interplay between melancholy and motion — like trying to dance while carrying something heavy in your chest. This is where Kate Pending feels most confident.

The production is rich and warm, every element earning its seat in the mix. If Hibiskus was a sigh, Nothing Changes is a deep breath before the plunge.

Walk Away pushes things into deeper house territory, with a rhythmic pulse that finally puts you on your feet. The low-end is lush without being obnoxious, and the melodic fragments feel like half-remembered conversations hanging in the haze. The one weakness? It resolves too neatly.

The track begs for a moment of chaos — a modulation, a delay run, a breakdown that fully abandons structure — but instead it stays tidy when it could have gone feral. It’s strong, but it’s holding something back.

Begging Blank is the emotional centrepiece, the one that feels hand-crafted rather than assembled. Textured beats, flickering ambience, and a melodic sense that sits comfortably between introspective and danceable. It’s the track that most clearly shows the value of her collaborative retreat — you can hear different voices, different instincts, different fingerprints woven into the arrangement.

There’s nothing to “fix” here, only room to be braver: push the vocal presence more, let it bleed into the mix rather than sit behind it. The emotional weight is there — let it take the wheel.

The closer, Monkey Dust, is the comedown you hope for after a borderline transcendental weekend: cinematic, slightly bruised, and weirdly comforting. It lingers in the best way, but again, sometimes feels so controlled that it loses the unpredictability that made tracks like Nothing Changes shine. Still, as an ending, it beautifully pulls the journey back down to earth.

“Two Words” is the kind of EP that proves electronic music doesn’t need to shout to make itself heard. Kate Pending’s production is elegant, emotionally tuned, and built with a level of care that most electronic artists skip in favour of cheap tension-build-drop formulas.

She’s operating in that sweet spot between chillstep introspection and deep house warmth, with hints of dubstep grit and future garage moodiness threading through everything.

As it stands, “Two Words” is a beautifully realised step in her evolution: immersive, thoughtful, and very, very Berlin.
