Florida-born turned Houston resident rapper MJ has erupted into 2024 with her new project MJMTHERAPPER X LOVESET. The EP is comprised of two fresh singles boasting her unique rap talents and stellar self-production.
The first track, EVERYTIME, is short, coming in at just under 3 minutes, but certainly sweet. It kicks off with a soft and jazzy guitar progression over which MJ sings in her cool, laid-back style. The earworm of a hook repeats over the verse allowing listeners to revel in MJ’s poetic and relatable lyrics; every time there’s someone different/feel the void because I’m lonely, as it goes on.
She then hops onto the track with a snappy rap verse, emphasising her distinctive style with quirky inflections and high-pitched accents to round off each line. Beneath the vocals, the instrumentation progresses through keyboard riffs wrapped around that central guitar part adding a joyful undertone to the track, while the beat perks up with exotic percussive hits.
The hook comes around once again before another rap verse in which MJ’s personality totally shines through in her bouncy characteristic delivery.
And this rides on in the EP’s second track. Following a similar structure, Rendezvous starts with a strong lyrical hook atop a smooth guitar line seeping with “idgaf” attitude from its minor tonality. However, MJ’s words say anything but “idgaf” as she details a complicated love story for two complex characters through a tight rap flow and visual imagery that paints the picture as clear as day.
The overall vibe of this EP is chill but engaging with MJ’s calm background production merged with her upbeat rapping. They will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside while igniting your inner bad-b*tch attitude. The final finish makes MJMTHERAPPER X LOVESET a polished project, cementing MJ as one to look out for in 2024.
