WE REVIEW THE NEW EP FROM SPANGLED – LITTLE TOM

Hailing from Manchester, Spangled is a four-piece band that emerged on the scene in 2019 with their eclectic mix of witty, heartfelt lyrics, energetic attitudes, and captivating guitar riffs. Drawing inspiration from legendary artists like The Beatles, David Bowie, and Arctic Monkeys, Spangled promises a unique musical experience with their latest 2-track release, “Little Tom”.

“Little Tom” comes at the perfect time, following the highs of the festival season. This high-octane release promises to be the ideal soundtrack to sail into the summer sunset, with its infectious energy and intricate lyrics.

The EP kicks off with the titular track, “Little Tom”, which is a tribute to the band’s cousin, a footballer nicknamed “Little Tom”. The song’s lyrics aim to get him pumped up for matches. The opening monologue sets the stage for what’s to come, and as the full band kicks in, you’re treated to a collision of quintessential indie rock and psychedelic undertones. The combination of Ben Johnson’s lyrics and Jamie Halliday’s guitar riffs creates an engaging sonic experience.

The B-side track “Smile Forever” provides a contrast to the high-energy vibes of “Little Tom”. This track explores themes of loss and the search for light at the end of a dark tunnel. It offers a breather from the pounding rhythm of the opening track and showcases the band’s versatility in handling different emotions.

The songs’ production, helmed by Gareth Nuttall and mastered by Grant Berry, is worth noting. The music is a well-crafted blend of various influences, reflecting the band’s commitment to creating a distinct sound. The guitar work is sharp, and the vocals are engaging, making for a solid overall production.
