“What Were You Trying To Say” is the newest single from Doncaster’s The Denabys.
Following up from previous singles “Can You Feel It” and “Talk Of The Town” I had high hopes for this, as I feel like with every new track, they just get better and better.
This is no exception, whilst it’s not my favourite track of the Denabys, it does continue to show how much they’ve grown as a band and how much skill they’re building, it’s the best track they’ve produced this year.
The intro is a mix of rock, grunge and punk, giving that hint of heaviness, without going too far, then suddenly frontman Niall Ogley’s vocals come in with this infectious fever.
One thing Niall is extremely good at, is consistency, his vocals keep up with the heavy backing track throughout the track, his voice is unique and gives that power, as well as carrying the emotion of the lyrics, something I think is hard to achieve.
Part way through, it suddenly dips and slows down briefly, which hooks you back in, my interest was peaked from the beginning, but it’s good to switch it up and just draw your listener in more, which this does.
The drum work on the single is art, it’s high-energy, and brings the whole thing together, whilst the guitar and bass keep up the loud, punk-esque sound that The Denabys are settling into.
The lyrics are raw, speaking of a potentially toxic and turbulent relationship, and the loud punk-rock symbolising the anger and stress of the individual, something that is relatable to many people.
All in all it’s a brilliant track, the artwork is simple, but good, showing the band, but I think it was going to be difficult to beat the “Talk Of The Town” artwork and branding, which was spot on.
A really well crafted song and I look forward to seeing what comes next from The Denabys…
