I didn’t know what to expect when I hit play on Andy Whitaker and Michael Reed’s new track “Out and About”, but I’ll be honest, I was in for a treat.
The song opens with this rising sound that builds like anticipation itself. Then suddenly, guitars shimmer, drums lock in, and there’s this driving sense of urgency that immediately pulls you in. There’s also a psychedelic vibe to it, maybe it’s the guitar tone or the way everything sort of shimmers together but it works. It’s catchy but it also has this dreamy, hazy feeling, like you’re hearing a memory instead of just a song. And when Andy sings “I’m out and about”, it’s simple, but it sticks in your head instantly. I found myself humming it after just one listen (for real!).

The lyrics made me smile. They’re straightforward but something is endearing about the way he describes wanting to get out, explore, just be again. Knowing that the song was written on a hot day in the studio, wishing the singer could be outside, makes it even better. You can feel that joy in the song, like he’s really singing himself into freedom.
Funnily, my favorite part comes with the ending. Indeed, the sound fades slowly, leaving just his voice hanging there, fading like the last sunlight of the day. It’s such a small detail, but it keeps the song stuck in your head like it didn’t really end.
“Out and About” is our first glimpse into the duo’s upcoming album, ‘The Black & White Detective and the Technicolour Cowboy’ and what an intriguing name. The song might just haunt me forever, in the best way. That “I’m out and about” line? Yeah, it’s going to live in my head rent-free for a long time.
