Archie Baker and The Blue Meanies return with this new track, a breath-taking version of the folk classic, House Of The Rising Sun. Continuing to branch out after the success of album Carbrook back in 2024, this blues guitar driven cover only further illustrates the depth they now have in their sound.
Far most than a simple rehashing of a well know tune, it reimagines it completely. Along with the expected blues core to the track they also bring in a gospel choir to add another level to the already alluring vocals. If that wasn’t enough, they also develop it with an original organ solo section from band member John England, really pushing home how they wanted to do something more than a basic cover track.
With this release we see a return to a very true blues sound after a detour to a mush more pop infused effort with their last release, I Got You. Despite that track having many positives itself, this feels much more natural to them, and once again showcases them at the very top of their game.
Taking on such a well known and oft-covered track was a daring endeavour. Past versions of it, especially The Animals 1964 hit version, have engrained it in many peoples minds. Yet what Baker has managed to do so magnificently is put his own unique twist on it so well that it stands up on its own merit. A brilliantly engrossing version of an old classic.
