WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM AXON BOWER

Hailing from the small and humble island of Jersey is singer/songwriter Axon Bower. Since 2013 he’s been honing his songwriting skills and, thanks to the misfortune of a near-fatal neck injury which left him with a wealth of spare time on his hands, he has crafted a rich and thought-provoking sound.

However, it wasn’t until 2021 that he began sharing his music with the world. Four singles and many gigs later, Axon Bower is back with a fifth tune, Lying On The Floor.

There is no hesitation as the song begins, diving straight into an acoustic guitar and vocal verse backed by moderate drums. Bower’s words are rich as he sings; I’ll tell you a secret now/no one’s in control/you better believe it now/you better let it go, ruminating with wisdom beyond his years.

As the verse progresses, chirpy piano melodies weave themselves between the existing instrumentals, adding a reflective depth to the mix. Hints of Bob Dylan and Ben Howard seep through Bower’s songwriting, though not taking away from his originality.

Softer moments of simple guitar and vocals are scattered throughout, which do a good job of retaining listener attention. Around a minute in, the song breaks before pivoting towards a smoother section in which Bower’s dulcet vocals bathe in their accompaniment.

Lying On The Floor is a nice, breezy tune that sums up Bower as an artist. Although his songwriting is sound in terms of refinement, I can’t help but feel as though this song doesn’t reach its full potential; the chorus could be more impactful or the arrangement even bigger. That being said, oftentimes less is more and there’s nothing wrong with that!

Axon Bower’s latest single is now available to stream on all major platforms.
