Written back in 1998, Illinois’ own Ben Aubergine’s has released his debut single. ‘Spoke For What I Knew’, a track that explores the misalignment of emotions between two people.
Written and performed in it’s entirety by Ben Aubergine himself, ‘Spoke For What I Knew’ is bought to life with a mysterious chord progression, bouncing from 90’s detective to whimsical pop all before the vocals even begin. Despite the joyful mystery surrounding the keys, Ben’s voice brings everything together as a pre-millennium pop song.
Almost as if Echo & the Bunnymen were from the states, ‘Spoke For What I Knew’ has an aura of whimsy, kind of like it’s not supposed to be there but it definitely belongs.
A welcome vibe shift dead on the two-minute mark, Ben rips into an electric guitar solo which could be construed as flexing his skillset, but he does so in a way that benefits the song’s structure so we’ll let him have this one. A return to the original sound closes out the track, bringing together the various elements of Ben Aubergine’s songwriting and creating a sonic mystery that reflects the nature of his lyrics.
For a track that’s been on the backburner for 27 years, sandwiching a career as a physician and a family man, ‘Spoke For What I Knew’ is a welcome introduction to the talent Ben possesses, and with releases to come upon completion of more songs, I look forward to seeing what more he’s got in store, and you should too!
