Ben Gorb - Just Be Yourself

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM BEN GORB

‘Just Be Yourself’ is the new single from Macclesfield-bred, Manchester-based Ben Gorb. The track enters a catalogue of equally optimistic titled singles such as ‘Let the Music Play’, ‘Fly High’ and this year’s ‘Brand New Year’ and it’s more of the same catchy classic rock from the singer-songwriter with his new release.

Ben Gorb has been a fixture of the North West’s underground scene for years having released his debut EP ‘Ride’ in 2016. After the success of 2019’s ‘Sometimes’ and 2020’s ‘Singing Out Loud’ successive albums quickly followed with Reflections and Burning Light.

Gorb’s classic rock influences are evident from the outset of ‘Just Be Yourself’. The track opens with a rousing riff reminiscent of Bon Scott-era AC/DC and continues in a similarly conventional rock’n’roll manner. The jaunty hit displays Gorb’s positively infused songwriting and knack for bluesy grooves.

The track fits neatly into Gorb’s brand of 60s & 70s-influenced rock and his optimistic modern twist on the genre is evident in the chorus’s lyrics, ‘Don’t go tryna be someone else, You’ve got your own life, Your own story to tell, Just be yourself.’ The most interesting part of the tune is the Boston ‘More Than a Feeling ’-like a hook which lends the song a poppy edge.

Clocking in at over four minutes, the track felt overlong and overly repetitive by its conclusion and would benefit by being cut at the three-minute mark. Despite this, the track is an ample addition to Gorb’s discography and shows a definite change of pace from his earlier works.
