BLOSSOMS

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM BLOSSOMS – JOKE ABOUT DIVORCE

It’s a great week for Blossoms fans. The Stockport outfit are back with their first music in over a year with the danceable ‘Joke About Divorce.’ After several chart-topping albums and a sell-out European tour at the beginning of this year, it felt right for them to grace the people with new music. With behind the scenes clips, bright pink stills and photos amongst the flowers, they built excitement up for release day at the beginning of this week.

Blossoms have always brought such a fun perspective to various topics with their sharp songwriting skills combined with a wonderful sense of humour. There are not many bands who can make a bright orange album centred around an 8-foot fibre glass gorilla that got stolen from a garden centre. Blossoms absolutely smashed this with that aforementioned humour and witticisms which are on full display in their newest effort too.

‘Joke About Divorce’ opens with beautiful synths in a back-and-forth exchange with guitars that feel surfer rock-esque. Tom Ogden’s velvet vocals glide in to tell the story of an argument that wasn’t the right time for a joke about divorce. It was meant to be playful and a tool to diffuse the argument didn’t quite have the desired effect and now it’s immortalised in this track.

The choruses are catchy with memorable lyrics that will make for a fun singalong in a live setting. All the vocals blend together to give such a rich sound. The verses feel like a window into a conversation as the backing vocals from Charlie Salt and Myles Kellock tell Ogden off. With grooving drumbeats and fun basslines, this is a wonderful step into the next Blossoms era. What does remain is the iconic Blossoms x Rick Astley relationship with backing vocals from Astley slotting in nicely to close out the funky instrumental.

With this era sees Blossoms coming back onto the festival circuit with a headline slot at Neighbourhood Festival and hopefully lots more fun danceable tunes with that unique humorous songwriting.
