DISCONNECTED - CALVES IN THE DARK

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM CALVES IN THE DARK

Bursting in with their debut single, Disconnected, Calves In The Dark spends no time grazing on this firey track. The Sheffield-based rock group roars into action from the first second with tasteful mergings in groove rock and classic rock.

Disconnected is a snappy two-and-a-half minute piece that never lets up on its forceful guitars, drums and vocals alike. It punches in with a Led Zeppelin-styled chug before the entourage of other instrumentation fills out the wall of sound. The fuzzy vocal effects heard throughout the track blend perfectly with the ferocity and gritty nature that the music presents.

Besides momentary changes in tempo to compensate for the verse changes, the energy never lets up here. If you love your guitars with bending leads and pounding rhythmic riffs then Calves In The Dark will fill that void for you. Despite the theme of the track about being disconnected from society and the tongue-in-cheek reference to the internet, Calves are very much switched on.

It may be an obvious metaphor, but given their name and musical styles, it feels like you’re listening to a stampede from a herd. Perhaps the opening riff spooked them, but it doesn’t sound like there’s any stopping. The short length of the song still packs in plenty of dealings and versatility. Their melodic chorus moments which are still rapid blend into stoner rock territory; think of the many many Josh Homme’s projects. It’s a sandy-ripping headbanger.

What was certainly put into perspective when reviewing this track, is that if you do like your rock huge and full of riffs, then you will find it hard to tire of Disconnected. The guitar tones bleed that classic American desert tone and the snare hits feel like they could snap at any second.

Calves In The Dark are only at the beginning of their journey. However, starting with a track like Disconnected is enough to get anyone excited and ears close to the ground. We very much look forward to Calves In The Dark’s future endeavours.
