Strutting the line between performer and popstar status is Sydney-based Carl De Villa. This multi-faceted creative is known for their diverse career in the entertainment industries, first appearing on Australian television and now pursuing their passion as a solo artist alongside musical theatre endeavours.
A highlight of Carl De Villa’s musical journey was receiving praise from Boy George on Australia’s The Voice. With their new single, Airplane, it’s clear why the new romantic queer icon was so impressed.
The track is a pure pop banger through and through. Reminiscent of De Villa’s pop predecessors Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, Airplane boasts the balance between vocal prowess and clean-lined production that makes the genre so inviting.
Airplane’s intro provides some scenic context, starting with a mock tannoy voice “paging Carl De Villa” in a bustling airport. The music swoops in as we hear a plane taking off and fading into the first verse.
Mellow electronic instrumentals shape the verse, forcing focus on De Villa’s alluring voice. It’s soft and captivating and truly entices you into their narrative. We get our first taste of the chorus hook following the first verse; “airplane take me there/to the skies without a care.”
However, it’s not until the full chorus that this song proves itself as a true pop anthem. Layered vocals dance around pulsating rhythmic beats to simulate a club atmosphere. Oozing with freedom and release, this track wouldn’t go amiss on a night out with the girls.
As impactful as Airplane is, some more noticeable bass lines would make it even better, rounding off the airy tones and making De Villa’s vocals shine just that bit more.
That being said, it’s obvious that Carl De Villa has an expert grip on what makes good pop music, and continues to impress global audiences with their dedication to the art.
