Big Star - Carnivali

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM CARNIVALI – BIG STAR

Hailing from Bristol, Steve Carnovale, AKA Carnivali has released their newest single “Big Star” – who promises their “most emotionally-driven anthem to date” – consider me intrigued already.

When I think of anything stars, I automatically think of twinkly, shining beams, maybe shooting about with a bit of energy or a plunge of motivation almost, call it deep but that’s how I’m reading into it.

And you know what, “Big Star” has this mellow, twinkly beginning, that I was almost expecting, but not? It’s got a soft yet sombre feel, whilst also somehow being upbeat and fun, when Carnivali’s vocals kick in, I immediately knew that the sound was perfect for his voice.

The lyrics are deep without you even realising, from talking about watching from heaven, fighting through tough nights and chasing your dreams and health, it’s a mixed bag of motivation and depth, with a touch of nostalgic electronica and synth, that pulls it all together, it definitely has the emotionally-driven lyrics, and it’s something I would expect to give some real texture to a walk, drive or even just a night in listening to some music.

The different elements of wave and electronica are beautifully mastered, it all blends together brilliantly and nothing feels out of place, or fighting to be the front runner as such, just working in perfect harmony together and giving a pure infectious rhythm,

It’s a short but sweet track, packing quite a punch and I feel like it could relate to a lot of people and situations or walks of life.

The artwork I’m not necessarily keen on, it’s very flashy, cartoony, it does match the lyrics and I guess is essentially heading for the stars as a big star (with a bloody big one in the background), but I envisioned a more space-like landscapre with lots of shooting and twinkling stars incorporated, that said, if you want to stand out, you have to be different and this is different, not my cup of tea, but the artwork is impressive.

All in all, it’s very well put together and feels both intimate and crowd-worthy, a tough balance displayed well, consider me impressed, as I’ll be keeping an eye out for Carnivali’s next work.
