Charlotte Grayson’s latest single, ‘Low Standards,’ leans into the jangly, heart-on-sleeve charm that fans have come to expect. Following January’s raucous ‘Get Outta My Yard,’ this track takes a subtler, more stripped-back route, but don’t mistake that for a lack of punch. There’s a biting wit in the lyrics, as Grayson laments her questionable taste in men with a self-deprecating grin. It’s the kind of relatable, no-nonsense songwriting that we love her at RGM.
‘Low Standards’ benefits from the band’s restraint. The verses are light and spacious, leaving plenty of breathing room for Grayson’s vocals to take center stage. There’s a subtle country twang in the guitar licks, adding warmth without veering into pastiche.
Backing vocals from Millie Jones of Crescent were a last-minute addition, good call. Her harmonies add a touch of richness that elevates the track. It’s these happy accidents that often yield the most memorable results, and this is no exception.
Production-wise, Mark Aubrey’s involvement ensures everything feels polished but not overdone. His familiarity with Grayson’s sound allows the raw, emotional core of the track to shine through.
While the lyrical wit lands well, the arrangement in places could push the boundaries a little more. The middle eight, while effective, could have benefitted from a sharper left turn — a bold instrumental break or a more experimental edge to contrast the otherwise smooth flow.
But quibbles aside, ‘Low Standards’ showcases Charlotte Grayson’s knack for capturing life’s messier moments with charm and clarity. It’s a track that sticks in your mind, not because it’s trying too hard, but because it’s unafraid to be honest. Nice one.
