CITYLIGHTZ - #TRENDING

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM CITYLIGHTZ – #TRENDING

“The clocks a tickin and a tockin / As you login on ya social media”

West-Midlands four-piece Citylightz explore our strange and toxic online obsession in their latest single ‘#trending’.

The band, who originally formed back in 2009, follow on from a sprinkle of strong releases last year including ‘Game Over’, ‘Envy’ and ‘Hats Off’. Now they take their witty (and thought-provoking) lyricism set against a backdrop of punchy indie rock melodies to tell a tale of digital dystopia.

Running at over four minutes, ‘#trending’ ain’t short nor particularly sweet. Instead, we’re taken through the complexities of social media culture, touching on themes of online presence, digital validation, and that relentless quest for views.

The band have stated: “This track isn’t just about the highs of getting likes and views; it’s a commentary on the search for genuine connection in a world dominated by screens.”

Opening with a biting guitar strum before picking up the pace with the addition of a thumping bass and thundering drumbeat – rapid-fire verses are delivered over a catchy almost bouncing riff recounting our daily online habits. Choruses change it up with the introduction of backing harmonies which compliment the lead.

“Digital social LITE / Living your life for the likes”

There’s a real essence of The Specials and early Arctic Monkeys to this track – a sonic blend that includes not just indie, but rap and ska/punk elements too. Fitting for a song which provides such a reflective and powerful social commentary on modern day society.

Switching up the pace at the two minute fifty second mark – the repeated refrain which begins “I’m living my life while you’re live streaming it…” – reminding us all to try stay more present, before we miss the important bits.
