COFFEE HOUSE ANARCHISTS - ART_OFFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM COFFEE HOUSE ANARCHISTS – ART_OFFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

There’s something immediately unnerving and brilliant about ART_Official Intelligence, the new single from Montpellier’s genre-dodging agit-pop crew, Coffee House Anarchists. It starts off like your laptop’s having a meltdown — glitched-out synths, cold clattering drum loops, and a disembodied voice calmly reciting computer jargon like HAL-9000 reading your browser history aloud. It’s weird. It’s clever. And it’s got that twitchy, anarchic spirit that so many “indie dance” acts are too scared to touch these days.

Gone is the gentle, beard-stroking modern folk of their previous output. This is a full-blown sonic reboot. An upgrade, if you like. The track takes off with a rubbery bassline that wouldn’t sound out of place on a mid-2000s Hot Chip B-side, but there’s a jaggedness underneath — a sense that it could all come crashing down at any moment. And then there’s the voice. Flat, deliberate, French-accented English delivered with eerie calm. “Processor not responding. Memory overflow. AI-generated creativity.” It’s like being stuck inside ChatGPT’s dream sequence while on ketamine. In the best way.

COFFEE HOUSE ANARCHISTS - ART_OFFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Coffee House Anarchists are clearly trying to do something different here — not just make a danceable track, but ask a few uncomfortable questions while they’re at it. The lyrics (or maybe more accurately, the monologue) dissect the absurdity of our dependence on machines, using the kind of dry humour that’ll either make you grin or grit your teeth. Is it satire? Is it warning? Or is it just taking the piss? Maybe all three.

Musically, it’s tight as hell. The production is slick without being soulless, and the layering is clever — drum machines and synths collide with sneaky guitar textures that creep in through the cracks. There’s a confidence here, like a band who’ve been around the block and now just want to mess with the format. It’s refreshing to hear an indie act not chasing the same old ‘lads-in-leather-jackets-with-sad-choruses’ formula.

ART_Official Intelligence is a sharp left turn for Coffee House Anarchists, and thank fuck for that. It’s bold, self-aware, a bit absurd. Whether it marks a new permanent direction or just a one-off experiment, it’s proof that the band aren’t just evolving. They’re mutating. And in a world of AI clones and playlist-chasing filler, we need more of that kind of chaos.
