Cut Short are a 5-piece from Liverpool, and their newest single ‘Modern Affliction’ dropped on 6th Feb. The track, despite being out for such a short time, has already caused waves within the music scene. An example of this is the song being highlighted in various top tracks of the week lists.
Modern Affliction opens with aggression. The guitars and bass are full of power and volume. The drums are rock solid, and the vocals are smothered in grit. At the start there is a slight dance element to the song. Whilst the dance sequence at the beginning certainly prepares you for the trip Cut Short are going to take you on, I think, personally if it was near the end, it would simply leave you wanting more. Especially when you consider all the other styles and tones you end up hearing within the song. With gritty, aggression fuelled vocals and lyrics filled with frustration and anger blending together in a way that not many can achieve, this song is a powerhouse.
There’s a great level of skill within the vocals, especially when they get heavier, and I think Cut Short demonstrates a real understanding of how to blend heavy, gritty, almost screaming vocals with a softer, and more emotional vocal. It doesn’t feel chopped together as it can sometimes when bands attempt to mix two very different styles together. Everything blends really well together.
I think this track is a great example of how a band can blend different tempos, and vocal styles. There’s no ego, just skill. It takes you on a journey, and you’ll 100% will catch yourself head bopping or foot tapping along.
