Elijah Jenkins’ latest single, ‘Stay Tonight,’ subtle, stripped-back, and soaked in that late-night introspection where every decision feels like a turning point. Compared to his last release, ‘Take a Chance on Her,’ this one dials things down, leaning entirely into raw emotion with just Jenkins’ acoustic guitar and a delicate string arrangement by Roger Hughes filling out the space. It’s simple, but that’s exactly where its power lies.
Right from the first chord, there’s an intimacy to it. You can hear every breath, every slight shift in Jenkins’ delivery, and that vulnerability is what makes it hit hard. His voice carries that Frank Turner-esque weariness, a mix of grit and tenderness that makes the whole thing feel like a personal confession rather than just another love song. The lyrics tread familiar ground—crossroads in a relationship, the push and pull of nostalgia versus moving on—but there’s a poetic weight to them.
The strings, composed and produced by Hughes at The Attic Studios, never overpower—just a subtle undercurrent that swells at just the right moments, giving the song a cinematic quality without tipping into melodrama.
There’s a sense that Jenkins could push himself even further. The stripped-back approach works, but it stays firmly in safe territory. There’s room to let the production breathe a little more, maybe even allow for a slight build rather than keeping everything on one steady level. A shift in dynamics—an instrumental break, a more pronounced climax—could take the song from strong to unforgettable.
Still, ‘Stay Tonight’ is a compelling step forward for Jenkins. It’s raw, honest, and brimming with emotion without ever feeling overworked. If this is the first taste of what 2025 holds for him, it’s a promising sign. Keep an eye on this one.
