Hailing from Wigan, the jazzy-named Enuma Elish describe themselves playing with the genres of “Progressive, Esoteric, Genre-hopping Psych, Blues, Rock” – a real mash-up.
The new single “Panspermia” – starts off with this indie-like twang if you like, then dips into this rocky atmosphere but also psych? they weren’t lying about the genre-hopping!
Michelle is on vocals and she has an incredible voice, very soft spoken, but it works because it stands out from the backing track, which is ever-changing, it’s almost like a bit of a fever-dream in all honesty.
That’s not to say it’s a bad thing, it certainly kept my attention! but get this, for me it was a slow-burner, but one that kept my attention (which isn’t the easiest to do in the first place!) – so kudos points for that.
It gets progressively rockier as time goes on and Michelle’s vocals blend into it beautifully, whilst somehow still being the standout, the backing track ultimately compliments and elevates the vocals onto a different planet.
After about two and a half minutes, it really settles into the rockier genre, which I think suits the band really well – with a sublime guitar solo ahead of the three minute mark and everything really coming together.
It’s honestly a bit whacky, but I’m not mad about it – it’s one of these tracks that shouldn’t work, but does, they make genre-mixing sound easy, but I imagine it’s incredibly difficult.
Overall, the production is sound, it’s an intriguing sound that makes me want to listen to more – Enuma Elish have got a great range of sound and they’re not afraid to experiment – a great tune with potential for more.
