EVOL WALKS

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM EVOL WALKS – PET SEMATARY

Evol Walks, the Australian purveyor of rock and roll, take a bold step into the haunting realm with her latest single, “Pet Cemetery.” This track, a dark cover of the Ramones’ classic “Pet Sematary,” serves as the second instalment from their upcoming acoustic EP. Evol Walks takes a deep dive into acoustic/goth vibes, layering a mournful vocal over melancholy violins in a cover that pays homage to the Ramones while infusing it with their brooding energy.

The choice to reinterpret a punk classic into a sombre acoustic offering is inherently risky, and Evol Walks navigate this terrain with both reverence and reinvention. The mournful vocal delivery and the haunting accompaniment of the violin add layers of emotion that breathe new life into the iconic track. This isn’t a mere cover; it’s a reinterpretation that captures the essence of the original while immersing it in a darker, more introspective ambience.

The synergy between Evol Walks’ lead vocalist Leah Martin-Brown and the melancholy violin creates a sonic landscape that is both captivating and eerie. Martin-Brown’s vocal prowess shines through, delivering the sorrowful lyrics with authenticity, effectively channelling the emotional depth embedded in the Ramones’ original work. The violin, an unconventional addition to a punk cover, becomes a standout element, elevating “Pet Cemetery” beyond a simple homage.

While the intent behind the cover is clear, there are moments where the fusion of acoustic and goth elements feels slightly forced. The balance between homage and reinterpretation wavers, occasionally bordering on an identity crisis. It’s a tightrope walk between staying true to the punk roots of the Ramones and exploring new sonic territories, and at times, the equilibrium tips towards the middle ground.

In the grand scheme of things, Evol Walks’ “Pet Cemetery” is a commendable effort, showcasing their willingness to push the boundaries of their genre. The decision to cover a punk classic with such a drastically different sonic palette is a bold move, and for the most part, it pays off. While the execution isn’t flawless, the single stands as a testament to Evol Walks’ ability to infuse their music with a sense of dark allure, setting the stage for an acoustic EP that promises to explore uncharted musical territories.
