31 January saw the release of False Indigo’s rip-roaring new single, ‘(I Want An) Addiction’. The track is the post-grunge band’s fourth single since bursting onto the scene in late 2023 and maybe their best work to date.
The track kicks off in a pulverising fashion, displaying False Indigo’s affinity for metal-inspired drumming and blistering guitar work. Lead singer Karris soon enters the mix, immediately evoking British punk heroines such as Ari Up in her vocal blend of melody and brashness.
In ‘Addiction’, socio-political themes continue to be explored – previous singles have commented on class struggles, toxic relationships and fame and fortune. The track’s forthright lyrics highlight self-destructive tendencies, ‘I wanna ruin myself and everybody else,’ and a need for attention in an increasingly isolating world, ‘I wanna fall right down, everybody gather round’.
A natural progression from their summer single ‘Average Boy’, the Manchester band’s recent release carries a punk energy and rebellious spirit at its core. Despite being their most confrontational work to date, the track retains a catchy element beneath its stark exterior due to the presence of effective melodic hooks.
Fans of punk, metal and alt-rock will all find plenty to enjoy in ‘(I Want An) Addiction’ and the tune makes a strong addition to False Indigo’s blossoming discography.
