Surrendering hope. Losing faith. ‘Down in the Dirt’, the latest release by Feral Family, tackles the hopelessness that revolves around the idea of love. The third single from their upcoming EP, festive cheer finds itself far away from this tale of mans’ most complicated emotion.
“Never did find love” is the line that kicks things off, perched above the strings of an acoustic guitar and creating an impending sense of dread from the off.
The song builds around the haunting nature of the acoustic, adopting an almost grunge, bluesy sound in-between Jamie Lowe’s despair-lined vocals. The instrumentation around the vocals manage to capture quite an uncomfortable atmosphere and given the themes of ‘Down in the Dirt’, it feels almost comforting.
The final third sees an explosive turn, where despair turns into anger and the band’s name becomes all the more understandable. Two and a half minutes of suspenseful build-up finally erupts into a heavy instrumental that somehow keeps eeriness in the air.
A beautiful arrangement of emotions, Feral Family absolutely smashed it with ‘Down in the Dirt’. It’s relatable in the most haunting fashion and the hopelessness has a comforting edge. A song with real emotions.
A final show of 2025 sees Feral Family play Aaatma, Manchester on 18/12 whilst February 2026 will hold the release of their sophomore EP.
