Five years on from the release of their debut record, Fishing 4 Compliments have released ‘Ghosts’, the second single from their upcoming album ‘Lost In Good Intentions’. A development of their Alt-Folk sound, the Huddersfield-based group show exactly what they are about with ‘Ghosts’ and what to expect going forwards.
Following a mellow opening fifteen seconds, ‘Ghosts’ ramps up the intensity through the use of well-placed chugging, a groovy riff and bassline, before introducing the powerful voice of frontwoman Eileen. A unique hybrid of pop-inspired instrumentals with folky, whimsical vocals create a totally intriguing sound, which Fishing 4 Compliments capture fantastically.
Though each individual element is performed to the right degree, there are a few moments where the cross-genre musicianship sounds quite jumbled, however, as the song progresses you see just how well it works. The final section of ‘Ghosts’ includes backing vocals that provide a necessary punch to the closing moments, bringing the song together despite the varying sounds and creating a really strong single.
A track that I’d consider a grower, ‘Ghosts’ encapsulates the individuality of Fishing 4 Compliments perfectly, sounding foreign to begin with but exploding into it’s own.
Check out their upcoming album. Check out their tour. The uniqueness will definitely pull you in.
