FREETIME- ‘WIDEAWAKE’

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM FREETIME- ‘WIDEAWAKE’

Bristol’s new indie-rock, indie-pop band Freetime, have released their second single  ‘wide awake’.

Arriving after their funky debut single ‘daydream’ earlier this March, their latest track takes their sound into a hazier indie-pop space.

The track opens with airy guitar distortions, stripped back drums and a grounded bass melody. The lead vocals chime in with a dynamic, gravelly edge. Change is the overseeing theme of the lyrics- it’s not obvious what change exactly. But this opens the track up interpretation.

Free time’s song reminds me of The 1975 with similar twinkling guitar riffs. Throughout the chorus, upbeat drums thread a fast symbol that really scratches an itch. As the track progresses, these guitars intricately layer alongside distant hazy vocals before breaking into the chorus for a final time with a burst of energy.

With its easy, fun, floating indie-rock sound, Freetime’s ‘wide awake’ arrives just in time for the summer season- definitely one to play whilst catching some rays!
