GABRIELLE ORNATE - HAUNTED EARTH

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM GABRIELLE ORNATE – HAUNTED EARTH

Gabrielle Ornate is a self-proclaimed ‘bohemian songstress’ hailing from, Suffolk, who along with her band has just released her eighth single ‘Haunted Earth’, which in my eyes is a tad unfortunate given the spooky season has already been and gone.

The track begins with an immediate feeling of suspense, as if the lights have dimmed and the sound of popcorn chewing is imminent, before erupting into a heavy instrumental that left me unsure I was listening to the same song. This is swiftly followed by the introduction of Gabrielle’s vocals, which are a reflection of the ethereal vibe I had anticipated from the first seven seconds.

As the song progresses, the talent of the band becomes increasingly apparent through powerful drumming and an aggressive riff that is instantaneously captivating. However, there were times throughout where I found the vocals to be too theatrical for the instrumentation behind them. I also found some of the elements to clash and this is purely down to the bold nature of the song. This didn’t work for me, although it might work for others.

It is very clear what Gabrielle Ornate is trying to achieve through her music, writing songs that have a distinct whimsy about them and encourage deeper thought, whilst also remaining unique. She does this by combining disorientating heavy rock and US-style pop. Although I find elements of this song to be evidence of the talent that she and her band posses, for me it struggles as a complete song and lacks in comparison to her other releases.
