WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM GAWLD – AVALANCHE

If you haven’t heard of “GAWLD” they’re a four-piece project that stemed from Hull-based artist Adam Greaves, and they’re now a full blown band!

“Avalanche” is their latest release and the first song they recorded as a full band – so what do we make of it?

Adam says he was influenced by a lot of 80’s guitar music on this tune, Elvis Costello, REM and The Smiths, so I wasn’t sure whether or not to expect guitar riffs, acoustic melody, anthemic masterclass or all three.

Well, it is definitely a masterpiece for sure.

It’s a very subtle, chilled out tune, definitely travelling down the acoustic melody route, it’s an incredibly easy listen and I can see where the band had taken little hints of those influences, but flipped it on it’s head and made it their own.

The lyrics are quite melancholic, and feels like it tells a story of the working class pushing their way through life, and how that can ultimately, feel like an avalanche, I could have misinterpreted that, but that’s what I got and I really rated it – it felt very personal.

What I really liked though, is upon first listen, it didn’t feel like that staple sad song or one that guides you through the muddles of life, it felt like it was a sunny day, not a cloud in the sky, something you could listen to just walking down the street, with not a care in a world, it’s only when you really listen that those lyrics cut a little bit deeper, and it makes you stop and think.

If I’m being honest, it’s not what I was expecting, but in the best way possible, the intricacy and the little links to every day life made it for me and the listen in general just makes you feel good, a very fun instrumental – confusing when you say it out loud, but trust me, it works.

Definitely one to pop on your playlists – cracking tune.
