Hull singer-songwriter Gawld is back, and his new single, The Run, proves to be worth the wait.
Reemerging to bless us once again with his uniquely genre-bending tunes, this piece introduces us to a new side to his sound. A much bigger sound than we’ve heard from him before, The Run seems to usher in a new era for him, one that offers infinitely further horizons.
With this tune Gawld has taken the bold move to allow the enchanting tones of his voice to share the spotlight with a more prominent backdrop. The instrumentals in The Run step out from being simply being a platform to allow him to present his voice, and here become an experience in their own right. A real eclectic mix of influences seem to have smuggled their way into this new era of his, and they have propelled his sound into grounds he hasn’t been able to tread previously.
Regardless of his decision to take a different path, what was at the heart of Gawld’s sound is still very much present in The Run. It may have replaced some of its rawness for more rhythmic and melodic elements, but it clearly retains the overwhelming feeling that this is real down to earth, honest songwriting. That northern charm which he presents so well is still there throughout, and it balances dovetails with the new elements wonderfully.
The Run is undoubtably the high point so far for Gawld. This new direction has unlocked countless new avenues that he can explore, and if these are the first steps, it promises to be an exciting journey.
