Brand new duo Gifthorse announce themselves with this instantly memorable tune. Laden with synths and infectious guitar lines, it ensures the London based pair make an instant impact on all who stumble across it.
A fuzzy pop track taking inspiration from a brilliantly eclectic of influences, Please Love Me oozes playfulness. Catchy melodies and short sharp verses draw you into their contagious sound. Topped off by the anthemic qualities of the chorus, as vocalist Naomi Mann belts out “P-L-E-A-S-E”, it undeniably has the makings of an immediate singalong classic.
Citing influences as wide ranging as The Ronettes to Saint Etienne, it is easy to see how Gifthorse have created a sound with is both unique and familiar simultaneously. Shining through in their music you pick up the energy of Blondie, the eccentricity of Pulp and the sassiness of early Madonna, all of whom are also listed among their odd mishmash of influences.
At its core Please Love Me is a tale of desire. A hunger for affection as suggested by the title is present throughout, and is explored through a mix of emotion and listing of some more obscure London landmarks they wish to visit together. With their relatable and down-to-earth storytelling style of lyricism, it speaks of visiting parks heaths together. The inclusion of Highgate Cemetery as somewhere she longs to take him also gives it a nice twist, mixing the morbid with their glittering sound with Smiths-like ease.
With Please Love Me, Gifthorse have set on what has the potential to be a long and exciting journey for them and anyone who discovers their music. It doesn’t have the vibe of a first single, with their music already feeling brilliantly written and exceedingly mature. They’ve already debuted their live set throughout London and at Sheffield’s Tramlines festival, and as they now plan to move further afield, including Glasgow in October, we recommend you catch one of their performances as soon as you get chance.
