Harri Larkin is a singer song writer from Sheffield, rising in popularity, having being recognised by BBC Introducing, John Kennedy on Radio X and also BBC Radio 6 – an impressive catalogue of radio play!
Their newest single “Too Close to the Sun” was written following losing a friend to an accidental overdose, something that naturally, is difficult to navigate, but Harri Larkin have channeled this into a beautiful track with raw and intimate lyrics, that uplift and give a message that time heals and it’s ok to be vulnerable – which is powerful stuff.
The track wastes no time getting started, with the intro and vocals getting straight to work and ultimately straight to the point – something which I admire, a slow burner wouldn’t have suited this kind of track.
Fronted by Harri Tape, the vocal range on this song is stunning and gives a good balance of emotional and powerful, without it being too overwhelming alongside the lyrics, with the backing done by Abi Middleton, both of their tones compliment each other beautifully.
Despite it being a song of sorrow – the lyrics tell a story of getting through that journey of grief, and the backing track is surprisingly upbeat, but I feel like that just adds to the element of that there is light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to losing someone you love.
There is a real element of genre-mix, from indie to folk to pop, they have blended this together to make a fantastic track.
You can really hear the emotion in the vocals too – which makes it all the more powerful and likeable in general, it’s nice to hear natural emotion being channelled into a track.
The artwork is very well-matched to the song too – a falling angel statue with the sun in the background, it has a lot of different elements to it, but it works well and give it that real burst of energy that you hear in the track.
Ultimately, a very well produced track, with a fantastic backing tune, raw lyrics and powerful vocals that make a great tune that is worthy of your playlists.
