Hither Further -Seagulls (Overwhelm the Sky)

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM HITHER FURTHER – SEAGULLS (OVERWHELM THE SKY)

Hither Further’s debut single Seagulls (Overwhelm the Sky) drifts in like one of those grey Dublin mornings where the air feels heavy, the world moves slow, and your thoughts won’t bloody shut up.

It’s a melancholic little stunner — the kind of track that doesn’t so much start as seep into your ears, like it’s been hovering above your shoulder for years waiting for the right moment to descend. And when it finally does, it’s strangely comforting, strangely sad, and strangely addictive all at once.

You can hear straight away this is someone who understands restraint. The acoustic guitar sits there like the spine of the whole thing, unshowy and calm, letting the melody breathe instead of smothering it with needless embellishments.

Then the synth floats in — soft, glowing around the edges, almost ghostlike — and suddenly the whole track feels bigger, more cinematic, the kind of sound you’d expect to spill out of a studio in Iceland or Norway, not the emerald isle. There’s a patience to it that a lot of debut singles don’t dare to attempt.

Most new artists come kicking through the door begging for attention; HitherFurther just opens the door slowly and invites you to sit in the silence with him.

Vocally, he’s understated in that wonderfully Irish way — a voice that feels lived-in without being world-weary, emotional without ever tipping into melodrama. He doesn’t belt a thing. He just lets the words fall naturally, like he’s telling someone a truth he’s rehearsed a thousand times in his head but only just found the courage to say out loud. There’s a vulnerability there that hits hard, and thank fuck he doesn’t try to hide it behind production tricks or bravado.

The atmosphere is easily the strongest part of this track. You can practically feel the salt wind in your face, the vast grey sky, the sense of being swallowed by something bigger than yourself. It’s evocative as hell — the kind of music that doesn’t need a chorus that explodes or a hook that claws at your brain. Instead, it builds mood, builds tension, builds this quiet emotional weight that sits on your chest long after the song ends.

But here’s the part that needs saying: there’s a thin line between subtle and safe, and HitherFurther occasionally dips his toe on the wrong side of it. The track is good, no doubt, but it could do with one moment — just one — where he pushes the dynamic a little further, lets the emotion crack open, or allows the arrangement to swell beyond its comfort zone.

Still, for a debut? This is above what most artists manage on their first outing. It’s confident without bragging, delicate without falling apart, and atmospheric in a way that feels genuinely crafted rather than plucked from a preset pack.

For now, Seagulls (Overwhelm the Sky) is a gentle gut-punch of a debut. A slow-burner worth sinking into. A promise of bigger things. And a bloody lovely listen.
