WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM HOLLY LOVELADY – HELVELLYN

Liverpool’s wonderfully named Holly Lovelady is back with her latest track ‘Helvellyn’. A track Holly enthuses as being her best so far.

In the last few years, Holly has received significant praise, support and airplay from numerous local BBC and independent radio stations and it’s easy to see why. Holly’s electro-folk pop sound is immediately accessible and ‘Helvellyn’ certainly builds and develops on the sound of previous releases.

Of the track, Holly says ‘This song is a metaphor for life’s journey with its twists and turns and all its struggles, but with perseverance and determination, you can conquer your own personal mountain….’ Well, there was certainly no perseverance or determination needed to listen to Holly’s track.

It’s a big old sounding record. The track is driven along by an understated, bouncing percussive rhythm track in contrast to the relaxed, soothing and almost dreamlike vocal from Holly. The overall effect is quite hypnotic.

Obviously, with the uphill/mountain/struggle metaphors for a relationship, it can be easy to envisage a bit of a cringe-fest for the listener, but thankfully not here. There’s no ‘metaphor bingo’, the writing is as clever and confident as the production.

It would be an obvious, almost lazy comparison to point towards Fleetwood Mac in their finest global supergroup moments as a reference, but I’m going to have to be lazy and obvious here. If you like that sound (and let’s face it, it’s hard not to) then Holly Lovelady is for you.
