Manchester-based musician Jack Hyphen returns with his second release of 2023 – the shimmering new single ‘Lifetime’.
Formed from the ashes of the now defunct Herefordshire indie band Point Zero, Jack Hyphen began as a solo project before progressing into a four-piece before the release of debut EP ‘Stops/Changes’ in 2019.
In this new outfit, Hyphen has forged a sound very much of his own. It’s a self-proclaimed ‘sparkling alt rock’ vibe designed to ‘soothe the soul’. And this latest release feels definitely designed to do that.
Running at just over two and a half minutes, ‘Lifetime’ may be short but it’s also incredibly bittersweet. “Lifetime is about the struggle of wanting to do the things you want to do, and you know you need to, but the pressure that is put on you, or you put on yourself, is stopping you from doing so” Hyphen explained.
Opening with bright and biting guitar licks; vocals kick in almost immediately as Hyphen muses over the frustrations and obstacles life can throw our way.
“Contained inside me is something I’ve gotta release / I’ll get it out eventually / Maybe on the edge of my lifetime”
Jack’s vocal delivery is light and sweet throughout with layered harmonies in places giving off a gorgeous mellow tone which, when backed by the aforementioned guitars, is nothing short of a treat for the ears.
There’s a really great message to this track. ‘Lifetime’ explores the idea that despite the challenges or stumbling blocks we may face in our lives; we should always recognise our potential. And this artist seems sure to continue proving he’s got stacks of that.
