A triumphant return for the Chesterfield singer as his synth-drenched sound once again finds the mark in this new track.
Retaining every inch of his retro romanticism that we’ve quickly become accustomed to, One Last Time once again finds a wonderful mix of sparkle and tenderness. As you’d expect from him at this point, it is a track full of nostalgic rhythms which conjure up all sorts of imagery, topped off with some soul-baring lyrics which cut through the sounds to tell a story.
Where it does differ slightly from some of his previous releases is in its noticeably slowed-down tempo, with a greater reliance on the vocals and lyrics to carry it rather than the instrumentals. In many ways, it could be viewed as his boldest track to date, as he deliberately strips everything back and bares himself to the listener, and it pays off.
What we see really in One Last Time is a substitute for a little of the glamour we’ve seen in his last couple of tracks, and it is replaced with a little more rawness and a lot more emotion.
It feels like a statement on his musicianship, a real demonstration of how good a songwriter he is, and he’s laying that all out in front of us here.
This release is Burt’s counterpunch to anyone who had any doubts about his range. It shows how he can take these sounds from decades past and modernise then, whilst still keeping his music fresh and exciting, with each track seemingly different, and in most cases better, from the last. He continues to grow better and better as a lyricist and simply as a musician in general, so take a listen to this latest offering below.
