Doing exactly as the title promises, this new track from Bicester songwriter Jamie Felton is anything but ordinary. An epic ten minute spoken word monologue, it packs in honesty, laughs, and a touch of self-deprecation.
Billed as a critique of the modern music industry, Felton balances the bemoaning with wicked doses of humour throughout. This is before a big reveal comes crashing through the façade at the finale, almost as a reward for sticking with it right ‘til the end.
Not Your Average Song follows his track record of producing cutting, relatable lyrics. Whether he’s speaking of the demands on artists behind the scenes or the bloke down the front shouting “Play Wonderwall!”, the whole thing it driven by realism. Even in this track where he plays multiple characters, you can feel yourself relating, or at least recognising someone you know rooting within one of them.
For a talented multi-instrumentalist to decide to strip everything back and write a tune like this carried along almost solely by his lyrics is very ballsy. A constant looping and rising blunt riff continues throughout behind, but its clear this is all about his words. He draws you in minute upon minute with grim summaries, with the twist at the end almost making it movie like.
This is a strange song, again, exactly as it promised it would be when you saw you title. It’s a track you don’t fully follow until you have heard it in its entirety, at which point it becomes wonderfully cinematic. It is brilliance in songwriting on display. Take a listen below.
