As artist names go, Jeff ‘The Fish’ Lefroy and His Missadventures is right up there. And with The Fish’s latest misadventure – ‘Gotta Move’ – it appears the aquatic songster is here to get going.
The self-titled album is set for release next month but the first single swam quicker than the rest and is already here. ‘Gotta Move’ is as ludicrously enjoyable as its accompanying video. Berated by employees and other bureaucrats, The Fish has had enough.
‘Won’t you come with me, cut loose and break free” he declares with a child’s naivety. He’s not alone in his expedition. Joining him are saxes, brass and flutes. The group have an ambitious trip planned.
The music is as idyllic as The Fish’s dreaming. A fiesta of instrumentation is exuberantly playful while backing vocals call and respond to The Fish. Is he asking them to journey with him? If so, their answer is unequivocal.
It’s joyous entertainment and performed creatively too. For a mix this dense, some of the melodic and solo lines could be a little grander and bulkier within the mix but there’s enough going on for the spaces to be filled with the odd saxophone solo here and there.
Movement is central to the lyrics but there is a forward moment within the music too. It’s a positive and propulsive creation that, incidentally, is great fun while it’s on.
