‘It’s All About You (Valerie)’ is the charming new track from Jeff ‘The Fish’ Lefroy. Released on Valentine’s Day, the single is a groovy love letter from the heart and the soloist’s second of the year as he continues his quest to release a song every six weeks in 2025. Since leaving Mod Revival band Long Tall Shorty and going solo in 2023, Lefroy has amassed a catalogue of music that takes influence from diverse genres such as pop rock, northern soul, country, and R&B.
The track kicks off playfully, with a volley of winding guitars and a catchy riff immediately evoking 80s acts such as Elvis Costello. From the offset, ‘It’s All About You (Valerie)’ is an earworm full of infectious melodies that you’d have a hard time not tapping your foot along with.
The straightforward lyrics, a loving ode to the titular Valerie, are delivered effectively in Lefroy’s bluesy, baritone vocals and stop short of the overly soppy territory thanks to a generous dose of humour. Self-deprecating honesty, “Now I’ve been chasing the wrong kind, I nearly lost my mind”, and a sprinkling of meta-fiction, “This song just started rhyming”, also provide a level of relatability.
A drastic change of pace to the all-out blues and political themes seen on his previous single, ‘Don’t Blame The Politician’, this new release shows a sweeter side to Jeff Lefroy with greater emphasis on pop structures and a singalong quality. With an uplifting message and themes exploring the power of love at the track’s core, ‘It’s All About You (Valerie)’ is a valiant effort from the Irishman that’s tough to dislike.
