Space Man is a new single by Singer-Songwriter, Jeff ‘The Fish’ Lefroy, and it’s a song that has a retro feel to it, but it’s hard to place how much so. It falls somewhere between having a 70’s rock feel, whilst also somehow being a bit 90’s britpop, but is certainly a cracking bluesy tune that will get your attention. It’s got a really punchy groove and has a very clean, well produced audio quality that, although the song feels older, really modernises it. It also contrasts the gravelly vocals that have an air of authenticity and uniqueness.
Speaking of vocals, a real stand out part of the song are the female backing vocals which are really utilised about two thirds of the way into Space Man and right at the end, leading the track out. Until this point we hear a lot of oooh’s being sung behind the chorus, which almost sound like another instrument in the background, adding both a layer to the main section of the track and blending seamlessly with the music. However, when those vocals really come to the forefront of the song, it mimics the singing we have already heard, making it appear like a back and forth between the two voices, competing to be the stronger one- there is no winner though, they work together too well.
Lyrically the song is repetitive in the chorus, making sure you really know the title of the track, but instrumentally it’s much more intricate. Take for example at the end of each line in the verses, when the guitar does a little extra noodle just to emphasise the instrumentation which is vital to the tone of the composition, which is certainly a groovy number.
