John Hamilton

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM JOHN HAMILTON – LONGTIME

John Hamilton, a singer-songwriter from Ayrshire, Scotland, has delivered an honest track in the form of ‘Longtime’. Consisting of raw, raspy vocals and an emotive but catchy chord sequence, ‘Longtime’ certainly has it’s positives, though it sadly does fall short of something spectacular.

Sounding not too dissimilar to the acoustic works of Biffy Clyro, the song’s vibe is apparent from the get go. The vocal tone and guitar playing combine for a very melancholic performance, dragging the listener through three minutes of pure emotion. Despite the songs positives, there are unfortunately just as many negatives. The mix is mediocre at best, with the sheer volume of the acoustic guitar drowning out the vocals. The repetitiveness of the song does get, well, repetitive and though the lyrics are raw, some words just feel a bit cheesy. Had they been replaced with some more emotive language, ‘Longtime’ would do slightly more for me.

John Hamilton is a great songwriter and captures the emotion of his songs magnificently, however I do believe that ‘Longtime’ happened to be slightly to formulaic for it to blow the roof off. Despite this, John’s ability to make the listener feel things is undeniable and I hope we see more of this in the future. A good song, a great song with a few tweaks.
