WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM JOHN TIBBITS – TRUMPED UP

John Tibbits is a singer-songwriter hailing from South Birmingham’s Northfield. He comes from a family rich in musical tradition and began writing songs at only 14. Drawing inspiration from his time spent in a white-collar job in London over the past four years, the artist addresses the mundanities of daily life, romance and political disillusionment.

Tibbits is known for his blend of old and new sounds, which can be explained by the artists that influence his music like Frank Turner, Declan O’Rourke, Radiohead, and Bob Dylan. His songs are usually a fusion of folk foundations with alternative music elements.

His new song “Trumped Up” diverges somewhat from his style. Indeed, it presents a heavier sound than his typical folk/singer-songwriter fare. You’ll hear an interesting mix of Americana intros, melodic vocal lines, rock vibes, and even a metal breakdown. All to prove that the artist is all about breaking genre boundaries.

In itself, the song is a warning against the dangers posed by demagogues, written from the perspective of a devoted follower willing to sacrifice everything for their leader. The title leaves little doubt about who the song references, while the lyrics capture the blind loyalty and susceptibility of such followers.

Surely, lines like “You bet you can count on me / To do everything I need to / Sacrifice my dignity / Just tell me what I can do“, embody the essence of the song. It represents the fear and mockery Tibbits feels towards these followers, juxtaposing their blind faith with a call for deradicalisation. The urgency of the song’s message, initially intended for the November US elections, has prompted an earlier release to address contemporary political climates in the UK and France.

As a French person myself, the song hits hard and I can only hope that people will have an awakening when they listen to the track, for the better. Funnily, the chorus is incredibly addictive, making us want to sing along as if we’re part of a cult rallying behind our leader.

Moreover, fans of guitar you’re in for a treat – from the acoustic intro to the bass solo in the middle, John Tibbits got you covered!
