Jonny Blade is no stranger to us at RGM HQ – having grafting away and releasing lots of new music for us to soak up in recent years, including his latest offering “Drag Him Down”.
On the release, Jonny himself told us “This song is about the local pub scene within the UK and the characters you find in it, more specifically young lads looking to cause trouble and emit anti-social behavior.
Also exploring how alcohol and other substances can turn people into characters they’re not/they do not intend to be.”
This bio already sparked our interest, as with any good indie track, there’s usually a story or experience that’s been weaved into it, so let’s find out…
It’s a short but sweet track – under three minutes, but Jonny uses the time brilliantly, no time wasted with a catchy guitar hook – and I could already tell from the first 20 seconds it was going to be a track of storytelling.
And that it is, mentions of everything from adidas trainers, ordering rounds, interactions and relationships across different people and general behaviours you may have seen down the pub – it is what Jonny said, but told in a beautifully musically way.
The backing track makes this for me, it’s catchy, it’s punchy and you could vibe with it whether you were listening through headphones, through a speaker or live from Jonny himself, it really does feel like he’s settled into a solid style here and it’s brilliant to see the growth.
The only criticism I have is that sometimes the backing track is a tad overpowering, the lyrics have so much relatability and meaning and I feel like that just a little less instrumental volume would really allow them to take centre-stage and own it – but that said, I imagine that’s exactly what’s done live with Jonny.
The ending is SUBLIME, the lyric “he’s far too high to drag him down” and the little guitar twang with an immediate finish was the perfect way to end it and of course, I just wanted to go and listen again.
A really brilliant single, from the likes of “Repeat Offender” (which is still a great track) you can really hear the growth and talent that’s grown with Jonny and the passion that is prominent in his music – a really good single, watch this space for more!
