Jonny Blade, who I presume is named after his love for Sheffield United, is a young musician from York who has just released his debut single ‘Repeat Offender’. A regular poster on his social media pages, Jonny performs acoustic covers and snippets of some original material. With striking similarities to indie favourites such as Jake Bugg and the K’s , ‘Repeat Offender’ is a more than adequate introduction to talented musician.
I will be the first to admit when I don’t like a song but the truth is, I don’t hate this song at all. It’s catchy. The guitar work is nice and Jonny’s vocals are powerful throughout. There are some teething issues of course, the mixing is a little confusing and the drums fail to pack a punch, but that is to be expected for a debut single. Besides these minor issues, Jonny has provided us with a nostalgic, indie singalong that anyone would be proud of, let alone someone so young.
A classic indie tune, ‘Repeat Offender’ is mellow but punchy in the right places . The main riff is simple but it fits the vibe of the song perfectly. The backing vocals are awesome and add necessary layers. In my opinion, a little variation on the guitar solo could take this song to another level but that is subjective.
Jonny Blade has potential. A witty lyricist and an undeniably talented vocalist, I am excited to see where the future takes him. For a debut single, ‘Repeat Offender’ does exactly what it needs to do. It is an introduction the new generation of songwriters and I am here for it. A simple but exciting track, I’m very impressed.
