Leeds’ Jonny Blade returns with his fourth and latest single, Want What You Can’t Have. Producing another raucous indie rock banger, he continues to grow his profile as a real up-a-coming with energy by the bucket load.
On this journey which began with him as a ukulele playing youth we have already seen an impressively quick transformation into a more than competent leading man, and What You Can’t Have only further proves it. His combination of rapid firing lyrics through the verses and a infectiously anthemic chorus come together to create a track which feels instantly familiar, and will occupy your mind long after it finishes.
Blade’s growing craftmanship as a serious musician again shows no signs of stagnating. He shows a wonderful mixture of the rawness that defines his sound and an ever-increasing maturity as he pushes to prove he is the real deal. Far from being a thrown together indie-pop rehash, he goes over well-trodden ground, but always ends with a product which is undeniably his, and nothing close to a cheap imitation.
What You Can’t Have feels like a really important release on what has already been an upward trajectory for Blade. He’s appeared at some famous venues already, most notably on several occasions supporting The Lottery Winners, and with releases like this you can’t help but think he’s destines to headline those same venues himself. His tracks lend themselves so perfectly to a live setting, and after hearing this one you’re instantly imagining the chaos he could bring playing it to a packed room.
This is another step towards Stardom for the young man who was ‘Born in Sunderland, made in Yorkshire’, and it feels like we may well look back on it as a launch pad for a long a storied career. Take a listen for yourself below.
