‘Game of Blood’ is the new single from London-based soloist, JulianGK. The track is his first release of 2025 and looks to develop the pop-punk sound curated on debut EP ‘Heart on Sleeve’. Julian arrived on the scene with the solo project in early 2024 and it’s the artist’s most recent incarnation after a three-year hiatus due to an ear injury sustained during his time as frontman of the band, The Road Atlas.
The track is engaging from the off, opening with crashing drums and a rousing riff before we are greeted with Julian’s impassioned, stateside vocals. ‘Game of Blood’ wears its influences on its sleeve, immediately evoking pop soloists such as Hannah Grae and Lølø, as well as the heavier So-Cal punk influences Julian became acquainted with in the years he spent living in LA.
Things proceed in a consistently high-octane manner throughout the tracks near 3-minute duration. Angsty lyrics adequately convey the deterioration of a toxic relationship, ‘I can still feel the emotional bruises, from when I brought you flowers last time,’ effectively juxtaposing the track’s upbeat nature. With ‘Game of Blood’s release coinciding with Valentine’s Day, it’s a perfectly ironic anti-love song.
In ‘Game of Blood’, the Costa Rican-born all-rounder crafts a sardonically sharp-witted spit at conventional love songs and delivers a catchy, energetic number that conveys the multiple factions of his influences. The track is a strong start to the year from a soloist who is more than making up for lost time.
