Kai Undrell is a boundary-defying singer-songwriter from Sheffield. He’s been known to refuse operation within the norm, playing with genres to create a playful folk fusion that’s totally fresh. His new EP “Full Fat Fear” is the latest product of his unique experimentation, and it’s gearing up to be a real hit.
The song starts with an up-tempo piano motif that anchors in the dynamic, while other parts jump in. Funky electronic drum hits topped with percussive accents level out the track above a melodic bassline, adding a depth to the tune greater than simply occupying frequencies. Each part falls together for an effortlessly smooth rhythm section.
Undrell’s rhythm crafting acts as a balanced bed for his distinctively buoyant vocals to bounce on. Even his light and wiry tone sets him apart from the rest, stringing together melodies that rise and fall in a way the brain can anticipate. Everything marries so nicely. It’s pure sonic satisfaction.
The instrumental niceties are witty yet vague lyrics that ring true to the title “Can It Get Any Better…?”, open to listener interpretation and personal relatability.
Though we’ve only been graced with one single from this EP, it’s safe to say that we can’t wait to hear “Full Fat Fear”. In reflection of Kai Undrell’s undeniable talents in songwriting and production, it’s going to be a good one.
