WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM KILRAVOCK – INCOMPATIBILITY

‘Incompatibility’ is the debut release from Omaha based Kilravock, the solo project of producer Steven W. Smith. Released alongside a cover of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’, ‘Incompatibility’ is a track that offers a neurodivergent perspective on the feeling of being alienated by society. Coming in at 5:05, this song couldn’t be further away from the style of Arctic Monkeys.

Influenced by an array of genres such as EDM, stoner-rock and industrial, ‘Incompatibility’ is a very heavy sounding track. As someone who struggles with super heavy music, I found myself enjoying this song more than I expected. A very catchy riff and some impressive vocals are at the forefront, whilst metal style screams and sound effects bounce around the mix.

Subsequently, a two minute guitar solo bursts into the song and brings it to a close, making for an interesting but enjoyable listening experience.

Due to the song’s length, there were moments that felt stale. Everything works, I just think it would have benefitted from being a minute or so shorter.

Though pretty generic sounding, ‘Incompatibility’ has an important message and is far from the worst stoner-rock song i’ve heard. Given that Kilravock produced and wrote the song, I think he’s done well, especially for a first solo release. Though not my total cup of tea, I enjoyed listening and will certainly keep an eye on any future releases.
