London based Kimi Nickerson should be an artist you have on your radar. If you like pop music, but a slightly darker take on pop, her new song, People Like You is definitely for you. Listening to it is definitely three minutes well spent.
People Like You is atmospheric from the very start. With synth pads creating an almost eerie and dramatic vibe and the sounds of distant vocalising present, you can’t help but be captivated by the interesting sound.
This continues even when the vocals come in, punchy and grabbing, whilst the synth horns that we hear in the background punctuate the end of each line we hear. It creates a vibe that is reminiscent of a Bond theme. The pacing changes slightly, not far in, but it still has that punchy style, quick and wordy, creating a distinctive sounding track. The vocals are clearly a very central part to the song, they are very rhythmic and drive the composition, but the effects are what add to the general tone and give it what is almost a dark feel.
The second verse builds the song up into a bigger sounding second chorus, compared to when we hear it the first time round. Part of the reason why it sounds more epic is the layered singing which makes it more ambient. Again, creating a dark, dramatic feel.
We then get a second of silence as the song appears to end, but comes back in again with the bridge to surprise listeners and, once again, give it atmosphere. This is further emphasised in the vocalising we hear in the background, that layered singing continuing to dive further into the moody tone. It’s genuinely haunting at this point.
The final chorus doesn’t disappoint as it sings the same words as before, but with variations on the line, ‘People Like You’. The different ways to sing the title, including pitching slightly higher, give it a bit of depth and show off Kimi’s vocals, but also implies that the song is concluding and is building up to that final line that hits with the perfect amount of energy.
This is Kimi’s first track of the year, with two other tracks released last year, showing how she is gradually building up a musical portfolio. As we are still so early on in the year, maybe we can expect more from this talented artist sometime soon. Until then, you can find me listening to this one on repeat.
