NY-based flutist Gina Izzo is back with a new project under the alias ladyybirdd. Her latest track, “Stay/Leave”, features the jazz saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins. The song is a striking fusion of jazz and ambient sensibilities, perfect for introspection. The track opens with a reflective piano melody played by ladyybirdd which envelops us in a meditative atmosphere right from the beginning.
This exact mood is beautifully echoed in the accompanying music video, which presents a nostalgic glimpse into life memories, possibly Gina’s own childhood.

Musically, the track feels like a conversation between Wilkins’ emotive saxophone and ladyybirdd’s piano and later on flute. As the song unfolds, Wilkins’ saxophone enters, blending with the soft piano in a way that feels really intimate, as if he was only playing for us. Eventually, ladyybirdd introduces her signature flute to the tune. The melody is then enhanced by subtle electronic effects that she has been known for in her live performances.
The blend of ambient soundscapes (through the use of electronic elements) with jazz instrumentation indeed makes “Stay / Leave” a unique listening experience. It’s perfect for background listening, providing a relaxing environment ideal for work or meditation. Yet, it’s also complex enough for deep listening, inviting us to pay attention to the delicate interplay between instruments.
Surely ladyybirdd’s approach to integrating jazz vibes, flute, and analog effects is far from conventional. Moreover, the collaboration with Wilkins, whose saxophone glides through the composition with grace, shows that a song can be both avant-garde and accessible.
Overall, “Stay/Leave” offers an interesting listen for those seeking music that goes beyond the mainstream music offer.
